SBF just runs BACKUP DATABASE, then zips the backup. If you use transparent data encryption (available only on SQL Server 2008 Enterprise), MSDN says BACKUP keeps the encryption. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc278098(v=sql.100).aspx#_Toc189384680
We have not tested it though - too exotic.
